Yulin dialect

The Yulin dialect is a branch of of the Guangdong dialect (Cantonese). The Yulin dialect is spoken in southwest China Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in Yulin city and surroundings. It is interesting to note the differences between similar words. Take the word “come” in hanyu or mandarin it is 来了 lai le in pin yin pronounced /lai la/; in the Guandong dialect it is /lei/; while in the Yulin dialect it is pronounced /loi la/. While han yu only has 4 tones, the Yulin dialect has many more distinct basic tones.

This dialect of Cantonese is said to be of the oldest form of Mandarin. The Yulin dialect is only spoken in Yulin city, Guangxi Zhuang zu Autonomous Region in Southwest China and has approximately 4 million speakers. In the video a passenger is talking to the bus driver:”This evening the patrol car might be out, ….. it looks like it’s raining.” Now how many of you understood that?
