Himeshima appears in creation myths and legends in Japan’s two great historical documents, the Kojikiand the Nihon Shoki . According to the Kojiki, the gods Izanagi and Izanami created Japan by giving birth to two islands, a large islandand a female island. This female island is now known as Himeshima.

This name also comes from a story contained in the Nihon Shoki. During Emperor Suini’s time over 2000 years ago, a beautiful princess who was born from a white stone who then fled to the island to escape marriage to prince Tsunuga-arashitofrom Ohokara (present day South Korea). Successful in her escape, the princess crossed the sea, arrived on Himeshima and became a goddess of Himekoso shrine; this is where the origin of the name Himeshima begins.
