Designated Natural Elements ( Oita Prefecture )

Obsidian

Obsidian is a hard black glass like volcanic rock. This volcanic rock is rare and is only found in two locations in Japan , the Tokachi region of central Hokkaido and Himeshima, Oita .

During the Stone Age era, this obsidian was used to make arrow tips. There is evidence that Stone Age tools made from Himeshima’s obsidian have not only been found in Kyushu but also as far away as Shikoku and the central Japan areas.

Stratum Folding

A weak layer subjected to pressure and by movement of the earth’s crust which is between two hard layers forms a pattern that is similar to Arabesque roof tiles. This Arabesque pattern is very unique and can be seen in Himeshima by Omi shore.
