Industry

Before the war the area that now occupies the tiger prawn fields was a salt field, which was one of the island’s main industries. The other was beef, many people kept a cow. After the war both were proved unsanitary and salt farming was banned across Japan . Forced to seek out a new industry the island turned to artificial cultivation of one of its natural resources, tiger prawns. Thus becoming what is know in Oita as the “one village, one product movement” . Besides the tiger prawn Himeshima is also known for its Himeshima Karei (flounder).

From the latter half of 1955, vacant salt fields for the first time were put to use in the artificial cultivation of tiger prawns, which is now one of the islands’ main industries. The name “Himeshima Tiger Prawns” (Himeshima Kuruma Ebi) is now known throughout Japan .
