Poetry composed about Himeshima

Poetry, songs, haiku and compositions on Himeshima are far too numerous to even have time to mention in this book. There are works by famous people and works by un-authored people both modern and long ago.

Among the poetry composed about Himeshima, the most representative poem of them all is composed by the monk H?getsu1, “Crossing the B?sh?nan and noticing Himeshima”.

The mention of Himeshima in the Man’yoshu, refers to Himeshima as Setsu (Kansai) but in H?getsu’s poem Himeshima is unmistakably noted as Bungo2 Himeshima. This poem together with Yabukosan’s “Akamagaseki” (Shimonoseki) and Dosai Kamei’s “Kagoshima Castle” are widely known as “The Three poems of Kyushu” ( Kyushu san zetsu). This poem is also known as: “Senka Himeshima” (The Boat that passes Himeshima).
