AYA

One traditional dance form in the Himeshima Bon Festival is called AYA. This form originates from the Kitaura region of Himeshima and is performed by both young men and women.

The man and woman form a pair. The man holds a bamboo stick (approximately 30cm in length) in each hand.

Today it is called “AYA Odori” while long ago; it was called “AYA ORU” or “AYA ORI”. “ORU” or “ORI” refers to the zigzag motion in which the dancers move. It has been said that the “AYA” comes from the children’s game “AYA TORI” or cat’s cradle in English.
